research day

Working on a documentary requires passion, an inquisitive nature, dedication and lots of INFORMATION…

I’ve found my hypothesis and now I have to prove it, but first I need some context.. So I headed to my local history room.

…this is the part of the movie where I trek to the nearest library to find the creepy librarian who leads me into a dungeon lined with towers of books…

not quite, in Yonkers you get a third floor closet with a window and an organized mess to sort through…

The librarian asked what book I was looking for and I requested to be left alone in the room. I like to roam on my own before I ask questions. So I sat down, found the pictorial history of Yonkers and got to jotting down notes

I was inundated with all types of literature pertaining to Yonkers, Westchester and New York State.

HEAVEN… if only I could freeze time. But for a few hours I browsed what is surely to be my home for the next few months. So many interesting titles

and maps.. SWEET

… and an awesome view for when I’ve downloaded too much info and I need a visual breather…

What more could I ask for? (an assistant)

Goal: Conduct solid research,  leave two days each week

(-_-) discipline gets results

Like, okay > Go!

Like, okay > Go!

Its early. I’ve been up for about 2 hours now. I decided last week that I can’t sleep anymore. There aren’t enough hours in a day. So, on 5 hours of sleep I begin my day. Today’s goal.. complete my Kickstarter fund raising trailer and begin to pitch my film.
(more on that later)
If I’m going to make it to the Olympic trials to begin shooting my first full length documentary… I’m going to have to make some sacrafices… Shoot me now.

Golden Girls (re-named “In The Ring” probably to maintain political correctness). Headphones or other non-computer speakers are highly suggested.

Photo essay: Underground Tourist

New York City. Dirty. Exciting. Harsh. Fast. Cold (even in the Summer) I love it that way. It’s an artist’s playground. With so much going on inspiration is bound to hit you. But if I compare the City to a body, the towering buildings, bustling streets and the neon  lights are all surface attractions, skin. And it is the skin that tourists are most attracted to. I guess you can call me a tourist too. But living so close to NYC allows me to dig deeper, traverse into the veins, climb bones and smell the sweat of the world’s most famous metropolis. For me the biggest attraction is the subway…

There is always something new to be seen. What amazes me most about the subway is its connecting factor.

Not just taking people from one place to the next, but the different types of people you can see at once.

Rich, poor, businessmen, housewives and students. One train could represent 10 countries, maybe more. All of whom are squished together for the next few stops as they temporarily share a journey.

Everyone has a place to go. I like to imagine everyone’s story as to why they are in the subway at that exact moment. I always think back to those scenes in movies where the train is stuck in the tunnels. I wonder how the personalities would mesh.

As the passengers settle into their seats and standing spaces, a quietness settles over the subway car. Faces stare blankly, carefully avoiding the eyes of each other. The subway seems like a pause in time, where everyone reflects on their busy lives above the ground.

I imagine their minds speeding just as fast as the train they sit in.

A subway ride can prove to be a moment of solace if you can ignore the screech of the tracks below, which over time becomes a whisper to the trained New York ear.

The subway is a culture all on its own. Though it is reminiscent of what can be seen above, it has an exotic flavor that’s sharp on the sensory palate.

Every once in a while you can find a smile…

but it is rare. In these moments of travel we can finally catch our breath, but we know eventually we have to return to the hustle and bustle of city life. At least there is time to process our thoughts, even if only for a moment.

Lately, I’ve been driving into the city which usually takes 20 minutes without traffic. I miss taking the subway, even if my trip into the city takes two hours, it gives me time to read, think and people watch. To me that is time well spent. The skin is nice, but give me flesh and bones any day. I’m an underground tourist.

Camera test: Industrial Shoppers and Gatherers

It is interesting to think of how we have advanced as a species. Food is no longer a struggle for us, but a matter of going to the store and buying goods. While venturing into my local Costco wholesale warehouse, I really got a grasp of just how far we had come.

Our market places became super markets that transformed into industrial stockpiles of foods and goods of all kinds. (Costco, Yonkers NY 2011)

We no longer hunt. We gather and shop. There is plenty to go around. Fresh off the conveyor belt, into your cart and off we go. (Salami links, Costco, Yonkers NY 2011)

Towers of choice! I find it funny how different a scene can look when you stop and stare for a bit. It’s kind of like looking at a word for too long, it all starts to look weird, alien. But I’ve been a customer here forever. (Clothing section, Costco, Yonkers NY 2011)

The stacks of clothing reminded me of the sweatshops that no doubt birthed them. As I considered the prices, I wondered what cut the workers received for their labor. I did not look to see their country of origin. (Men’s wool jackets, Costco, Yonkers NY 2011)

Most produce can be found boxed and shrink-wrapped. (Fresh fruit section, Costco, Yonkers NY 2011)

Milk and orange juice in a refrigerated room.

Shoppers selecting meat.

It’s interesting when you take a second look.

What do you think?

These are the three words I would like to define my life. They will also define the subject matter of my posts as these are three frames of thought that constantly run through my mind. Enjoy.

peace.
